About the area
The Pindos National Park, also known as Valia Calda, is located between the prefectures of Grevena and Ioannina. The total area reaches 68 990 hectares.The National Park includes the valley of Valia Calda, Arkoudorema and mountains Lingos and Mavrovouni.
Located at an altitude of 1400 meters and surrounded by mountains with an altitude of over 2000 meters between them are the peaks Avgo (2,177 m.), Pirostia (1.965 m.) Aftia (2.055 m.), Milia (2,180 m.), Flega ( 2.158 m.), Kakoplevri (2,160 m.), Tria sinora (2,050 m.) and Salatoura (2.019 m.).
The National Park is covered by coniferous and beech and many species of endemic plants (including the endemic plant Centaurea vlachorum ).Τhere are more than 80 species of birds (11 of which are predators) and some of them are protected.Some of these birds are hawks, eagles ,birds of the forest and nocturnal. A haven for all sorts of wild animal. Other rare mammals that live there are the otter, the deer and the bobcat. In the rivers of the valley we find two rare species of trout (Trutta Fario and Salvelinus Fontinalis).Moreover, there are many kinds of mushrooms and reptiles like vipers, lizards and salamanders. Seven of these species are protected throughout the world.
